The 1st edition of AFI was published in the year 1978. Earlier there was no standardisation work done in the field of Ayurveda formulation, drug manufacturing and pharmacopoeia. This was a unique attempt by Government of India to compile the scattered information on various formulations in classical Ayurvedic books. It is compiled in such a way to make it suitable to develop Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia standards and also to meet the requirements of Drugs and Cosmetics Act. AFI contains information on Ayurvedic drugs, identification of constituents of the drugs, parts used, and method of preparation and standardisation of the products.
Ayurvedic Formulary of India (AFI) is compiled in 2 volumes. There are several parts of AFI including appendices.
