Introduction of Jyotishmati Celastrus paniculata – 

  • Botanical name of Jyotishmati is Celastrus paniculata.
  • Family of Jyotishmati is Celastraceae.

Jyotishmati is a shrub has clear shining and reddish yellow bunches of fruits in cold season and yellowish green flowers in the month of April. It is mainly used for medicinal purpose. It is used in the skin disorders, fever, headache and intelligence promoting drug.

The word celastrus paniculata means, celastrus – fruit, a bushy evergreen shrub paniculata – having inflorescence, the axis of which is divided into branches bearing flowers.

  • The plant Jyotishmati is mentioned right from Vedic era. Vedas and Upanishads mentioned it as a Medhya drug i.e., nervine stimulator or intellect promoter.
  • Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam described Jyotishmati as a Shirovirechaniya drug.
  • In Nighantu  kala, texts like Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Shrangadhara Samhita, Nighantu Adarsha, Kaiyadeva Nighantu, Raja Nighantu, Priya Nighantu etc. explored its medicinal efficacy.
  • In Bhavaprakasha and Dhanwantari Nighantu it is said to be Kaphahara, Tikshna, Emetic and nervine stimulator.
  • In Raja Nighantu plant is mentioned as Agnipradipani (appetizer) and Medhya (brain tonic). In Kaiyadeva Nighantu plant is regarded as useful in Vrana (wound), Visarpa (erysipelas) etc.
  • Madanapala Nighantu also quoted its Medhya property.
  • Nighantu adarsha classified it under Taila Varga, Ashta Varga, Arka Varga and numerated its medicinal values.
  • Modem taxonomists and scientists consider the drug as an intellect promoter and nervine stimulator.

PHARMACO-THERAPEUTIC USES OF JYOTISHMATI Celastrus paniculata

  • Seed is beneficial as anti-rheumatic, aphrodisiac, emetic, laxative, nervine tonic.
  • Decoction is beneficial in gout, leprosy and paralysis.
  • Oil is stimulant, efficacious in beriberi and oedema, and improves memory.
  • Root and leaves are used for poultice in headache.
  • Seed is crushed and used to treat leucoderma.
  • Consumption of Jyotishmati leaves along with Japa flowers (hibiscus) and Kanji relieves amenorrhoea.
  • Jyotishmati oil processed with Apamarg, Kshara jala for 7 times may be applied locally.
  • Jyotishmati oil, Sarja kshara, Hingu should be taken with milk in Udara roga.
  • Jyotishmati oil and ginger root used as snuff remove drowsiness in fever.
